5 reasons why autumn is the best time to visit the Lake District
For years now, the Lake District has remained one of the most popular destinations for a staycation. While the area may see more visitors during the summer months, autumn is arguably the best time of year to visit this stunning National Park.
Here are five reasons why the Lake District should be on your list of places to visit this autumn.
1. It’s the best time for walking
Autumn is the perfect time for walking in the Lakes. Why? Because it’s cooler than the summer months, so you won’t find yourself working up too much of a sweat during bracing hikes up the fells, and perhaps more importantly, the treacherous wintry weather hasn’t yet set in.
Thanks to the milder weather, you’ll have plenty of choice on which routes to tackle. If you’re in search of inspiration, check out our guide to the top five walking routes in the Lake District which features the length of each walk in miles, information on difficulty, and estimated durations.
2. The local pubs feel even more inviting
Nothing beats cosying up for a drink or a bite to eat in a local pub. And with roaring fires and a selection of warming autumnal dishes on menus, this time of year is when the pubs of the Lake District feel most welcoming.
With so many to choose from, you won’t need to go far to find your nearest watering hole, but we recommend factoring a visit to cosy pub into a countryside walk or an expedition around one of Cumbria’s many quaint towns or villages.
3. You won’t find more beautiful scenery
One of the best things about autumn in the Lakes has to be the beautiful landscape. With the local woodlands transforming into gorgeous shades of orange and gold, and the bright blue skies casting reflections on the water, you’ll be hard pressed to find more stunning scenery.
Simply soak up the views as you embark on a countryside stroll or a boat trip around one of the lakes, or capture some amazing photographs to share with all your friends and family back home.
4. There’s plenty of festivals and events taking place
There are all sorts of events to get stuck into this autumn. First up is the Winter Droving at Penrith. This iconic festival of food, culture and art now attracts over 20k visitors every year and will be held over the weekend of 26th – 27th October.
Taking place from 2nd – 4th November in the picturesque grounds of the historic estate is the Holker Winter Market – the perfect place to stock up on artisan gifts and local produce, or watch street entertainers and live music over a mulled wine.
If you fancy watching some top wildlife and action films, listening to insightful speakers, or simply celebrating all things outdoors, why not head along to the Kendal Mountain Festival? Taking place from 15th – 18th November, this award-winning event welcomes thousands of outdoor enthusiasts each year.
5. You can take advantage of some amazing offers
As many autumn breaks will take place outside peak season, you’ll not only find the majority of accommodation is quieter, but you’ll also be able to snap it up for a great price.
The majority of our lodges at Whitbarrow have luxurious outdoor hot tubs – the perfect place to warm up on an autumn’s evening. Plus, with two-night breaks at Whitbarrow from as little £225, you can enjoy a relaxing escape with loved ones for less.
