Top places to soak up some history in Laugharne (and beyond)
Laugharne is a quaint coastal town, tucked away in the heart of Carmarthenshire. But there’s more to the home of Dylan Coastal Retreat than meets the eye. The area is home to countless historical attractions – several of which are just a few steps from our front door.
Here’s our run-down of the top places to soak up some historic in Laugharne and beyond.
Laugharne Castle
Pay a visit to the most famous of Laugharne’s landmarks – its 13th-century castle – and discover more about the town’s fascinating past. The site is where the local celebrated author, Dylan Thomas, wrote his collection of short stories titled ‘Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog’, and is also home to Victorian ornamental gardens and a magnificent Tudor mansion.
Dylan Thomas’s Boat House
The iconic Boat house is where the Welsh poet, writer and broadcaster once lived and penned some of his most famous works. The Boat House is just a short walk from Dylan Coastal Resort, and is also where you can enjoy some of the best views of the estuary. There’s even a charming little tearoom where you can stop for a brew and a selection of Welsh bakes.
Wales Coast Path
It wouldn’t be a trip to the coast without a spot of walking. And fortunately, the Wales Coast Path runs right past our resort. We recommend taking the picturesque 2.75km route from Dylan Thomas’s Boat House to Salt House Farm, which leads you up to the renowned viewpoint, St John’s Hill, and onwards to the castle.
Brown’s Hotel
This 1950’s hotel in the heart of Laugharne was the favourite watering hole of Dylan Thomas. Stop by for a pint and soak up the atmosphere in the quaint and cosy bar area – whose phone number the poet famously gave out as his own.
Gwili Railway
This historic railway line follows the River Gwili on a steady journey through farmland and wooded hillsides. Hop on a steam train, order yourself a traditional cream tea, and simply sit back and soak up the views. Well worth a visit we say.
National Botanic Garden of Wales
Just a short drive from Laugharne in Llanarthne is the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Spanning over 400 acres, and home to a range of recently restored Regency features including weirs, bridges and pathways, it’s a fabulous place to visit if you’re a budding botanist or history fan.
