Lake District awarded Unesco World Heritage Site status
At Whitbarrow, we always knew we were surrounded by some quite remarkable countryside and spectacular scenery. And now we know just how lucky we are, because the Lake District National Park has been awarded Unesco World Heritage Site status. In doing so, it becomes only the 31st place in the UK and its overseas territories to have been given this very special accolade.
The National Park was one of 33 sites around the world discussed by the Unesco committee at its most recent meeting in Krakow, Poland. The area’s beauty and farmland were praised, as was the inspiration it had provided to artists and writers over many centuries including Wordsworth, Ruskin and Beatrix Potter. It now means that Ullswater, Keswick and Helvellyn and all the other beautiful spots right on our doorstep join places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa’s Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America in making up our world’s heritage.
The Lake District National Park has been seeking World Heritage Site Status for more than three decades so we’re delighted to congratulate the Lake District National Park Partnership which put together the bid, on its momentous achievement.
Be one of the first to see the world’s newest Unesco site for yourself. Autumn in the Lakes is always special. Book now – we look forward to seeing you.
