Water sports in the Lakes
The Lake District offers some of the best water sports in the country, and with Ullswater right on the doorstep of our Whitbarrow resort, guests can enjoy unrivalled access to one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. There are so many ways to get out on the water in this part of the world, with activities suitable for everyone. Whether you’re interested in wakeboarding, kayaking or sailing, we’ve written up a list of different activities for you to try, so you can make the most of the last of the autumn days.
Canoeing
Paddle along at your own pace and take in the breathtaking views across the lakes, all from the comfort of your own canoe. Available all-year-round, a canoe is the perfect way to explore the beauty of the lakes and are usually available with two or three seats. Whether you want to escape for an hour or two with someone special, or plan a day of adventure with the kids, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can even raft up a couple of canoes and bring the rest of the family.
Kayaking
Similar to canoeing, kayaking can be enjoyed at your own pace and requires the use of a paddle to move the boat. The primary differences between them are that in a canoe, you typically kneel to get better control over the boat, while in a kayak, you sit in a hollowed-out hull with a small hole for entry. You also tend to use a single-bladed paddle in a canoe, instead of the double paddle used by kayakers. Solo kayaks are a great way to explore the Lakes on your own.
Wakeboarding
This high-adrenaline sport is ideal for thrill-seekers. This surface water sport involves being towed by a motorboat on a wakeboard and riding the wake of the boat as you hold onto the rope. More experienced riders often try to include tricks and manoeuvres at the crest of the wave. If you’re looking for an adventure, this is definitely the sport for you.
Paddleboarding
With a little bit of practice, paddleboarding might become your favourite way to explore the Lakes. All you’ll need for this is a board, a paddle and a little bit of balance. If you’re interested in learning how to paddleboard like a pro, there are a number of different schools and outdoor centres in the area that can help get you started.

Boat charter
If you want to see the Lakes in a more relaxed way, why not charter a boat to take you on a tour? There are plenty of sailing companies in the area, and many of the water sports schools also offer boat charters. They can even provide picnics and guided tours for you and your group so you can make a day of it.
