Why winter is the best time to visit Cornwall
Bude is one of the most popular seaside towns in Cornwall – and for good reason. From the beautiful beaches and amazing selection of shops, bars and restaurants, to its perfect position along the North Devon Heritage Coast, Bude is the ideal location for a fabulous getaway.
But Cornwall isn’t just a summer holiday destination. Here’s just a few reasons why winter is the best time to visit Burn resort in Bude.
Beautiful beaches
When it comes to beaches, you really are spoilt for choice. The sandy Summerleaze Beach is just a short walking distance from the town centre and is home to the historic Bude Sea Pool, while Crooklets Beach and Sandymouth Beach are just a short drive along the coast.
Not only are Bude’s beaches so much quieter during the winter months, they’re arguably more beautiful. Bude’s position on the north Devon coast means you can enjoy colourful winter sunsets and uninterrupted views out to sea.
Fabulous food
Burn is home is a fabulous range of facilities, including the newly refurbished on-site restaurant which serves delicious food in a relaxed setting. The ever-changing menus feature only the freshest, seasonal produce, including Cornish mussels, catch of the day, the famous Burn Burger, and a selection of homemade cakes and pastries.
Whether you fancy indulging in a hearty homemade pie after an action-packed day of exploring the beautiful Cornish coastline, want to enjoy a relaxing drink whilst listening to an evening of live music, or feel like popping in for a mid-afternoon coffee and slice of cake, our cosy bar and restaurant is the perfect place to warm up this winter.
Dramatic walking routes
Winter is the perfect time to explore the rugged north Cornwall coastline. Bude is close to several great walking routes which not only showcase some amazing views, but offer the opportunity to explore some amazing towns and villages steeped in history and culture. Crackington Haven is a small village just a few miles down the coast, and there’s a fabulous walking route which leads you along the sandy beach to Cambeak headland, before returning back through the sheltered woodlands of the Ludon Valley.
A more challenging walk, which is guaranteed to blow away the cobwebs, is the route from Tintagel to Boscastle harbour. There’s plenty of history in both towns; Tintagel is famously associated with King Arthur, while Boscastle has strong links to Thomas Hardy who met his first wife, Emma, in the town in 1870. The winding coastal path offers fantastic views, and with plenty of great local pubs in Boscastle, you can warm up with a local ale by the fireside before venturing back.
Unique attractions
Bude is the perfect base for exploring some of Cornwall’s top attractions and The Eden Project is a must-see for anyone visiting Cornwall. Visit during the winter months and not only will you beat the crowds, but you’ll be magically transported to warmer climates as you explore vibrant, fragrant rainforests and meander through lush Mediterranean landscapes.
Or if you fancy getting up close to some of the world’s rarest and most endangered species, why not head to Newquay Zoo? With an exciting variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits, it’s the perfect place to visit come rain or shine.
Wonderful watersports
Bude is famed for its fabulous watersports, with many European surf champions born and raised on Bude’s waves. The Atlantic facing north coast is the perfect place to surf, and if anything, surfing, sailing and windsurfing are just as popular during the winter months than in the summer.
The town is home to several surf schools that offer tuition to people of all ages and abilities. If you’ve never surfed before, winter is the perfect time to give it a go. Not only are the beaches less busy, but it’s the perfect rainy day activity. And the chances are you’ll be warmer in the sea than on land!

The best thing about exploring Bude during the winter months is that you can take advantage of amazing offers on accommodation that you wouldn’t normally get during the peak season.
