Top places for wintry photographs in the Lake District
Autumn and winter in the Lakes are nothing short of magical. And while it’s great to venture out and explore the beautiful surroundings, it’s safe to say that many of us would prefer to be cosied up by the fireside rather than trekking for miles in the cold in search of the perfect photograph.
With this in mind, here are our top places to snap the perfect wintry photograph in the Lake District.
Ullswater
Ullswater is wonderfully peaceful during the winter months, making it the ideal place to capture panoramic views across the water with jagged peaks and silhouettes of trees in the background. There are several great viewpoints around the lake and if you head across early in the day, you’ll be able to capture the morning mist over the water.
Little Langdale
Little Langdale is just a short drive from Ambleside and the area has plenty of beautiful scenery to snap. Park up by the river and take a short stroll to the nearby stone bridge or head across the fields and soak up some amazing far-reaching views over the lakes. If you’re feeling energetic, take a short climb up one of the fells and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views.
Loughrigg Fell
Also neighbouring the town of Ambleside is Loughrigg Fell which offers great views from every direction. It’s just a short trek to the top and you’ll be able to look out over Windemere and Loughrigg Tarn, the quaint town of Grasmere, and the Langdales. Again, for the most dramatic shots, head up first thing in the morning so the sunlight brings out the autumnal colours and the mist is still hovering over the lakeside.
Friars Crag
The iconic bench at the Friars Crag viewpoint is a must-see for anyone exploring the area. However in winter, the greyish hues of the lake and the snow-capped peaks contrast wonderfully with the colour of the bench, while the neighbouring trees frame the scene perfectly.
Buttermere
Buttermere has to be one of the Lake District’s ultimate beauty spots. Head over at sunrise or sunset when you’ll see the colourful sky reflected in the lake, and spend some magical minutes capturing the calm waters, snowy peaks, and the spindly trees that border the shores.
